Naïf tubes made of bioplastic
It’s of course wonderful to have good products with natural ingredients, but we always try to go the extra mile when it comes to sustainability. So, we asked ourselves what can we do now? Besides obtaining the Zero Plastic Inside seal from the Plastic Soup Foundation, we started working on more sustainable solutions for our packaging. From now you can find Naïf in bioplastic tubes made from sugar cane. In addition, because we opted for a more sustainable packaging solution we’re entitled to carry the “I’m green TM logo”. We’re so proud!
The first product in a “green” tube is the Circular Face Scrub. The new tubes are recognizable by the I’m green logo. Our aim is to switch all the current tubes to bioplastic tubes. Every new production run will have this new logo. How awesome is that!
What is bioplastic?
Normal plastic is made from petroleum, while our bio plastic consists of Ethanol, extracted from 100% sugar cane. This reduces CO2 emissions (the carbon footprint) and therefore reduces the burden on the environment. For example, a 200ML Naïf tube has a 64 gr CO2 reduction compared to a plastic tube.
Are forests cut down to harvest sugar cane? No, and we’re going to tell you why not. So, sugar cane is extracted from Brazil, the largest supplier of sugar cane. A lot of residual waste is released during the production of sugar cane. Residual waste that you can use for a lot of things, such as making plastic. This way you don’t use fossil fuels and there won’t be extra harvesting. We choose to use sugar can to produce “bioplastic” tubes, however you can also use corn or potatoes instead. Bioplastic is also known as biobased plastic.
Can bioplastic be disposed in the GFT container?
No, it takes a few months before bioplastics are completely broken down. So even though it’s recycled in the GFT container, it might still do harm to animals such as seagulls who might eat the residue. We don’t want that! It’s really important to separate plastic, so it’s not possible to disappear from the chain and won’t end up in the ocean. Conclusion: you have to recycle it in the plastic container.

Alright, what else do I need to know about bioplastic?
- “I am green TM” Polyethylene is 100% recyclable
- 94% of our tubes are made of bioplastic. The other 4% is due to the use of ink and the cap is unfortunately not made of bioplastic. The reason for that is because bioplastic is not firm enough.
We’ll keep continuing to innovate and strive to make our tubes 100% made out of bioplastic, including the cap and making use of sustainable ink.
